Collection: Lettuce

Lactuca sativa
One of the very oldest garden plants and still always the essence of summer salad. Always a good base to set off more pungent or aromatic flavours. Though underestimated for its food value, crisp-leaf head lettuce is one of the richest vegetable sources of choline (an essential brain nutrient) in a normal diet. Get focused. Eat lettuce. Lettuce is native from the Mediterranean to Siberia, appreciated as an edible plant since ancient times.

Lettuce is a cool and cold weather green that does require cooler temperatures to grow really well. Extreme heat will cause bolting and bitter flavour. You can direct sow seeds in the early spring, as soon as soil can be worked. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep. The seeds sprout and grow whenever mild weather predominates, but their ideal germination temperature is 60-70F. Alternatively, you can start seeds indoors and set out acclimated seedlings 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost date.

Succession plant lettuce for a continual crop, but avoid long days and heat of early-mid summer. You can resume your succession sowing for fall once the heat has subsided, about 4-7 weeks before the first predicted frost of the season. Spacing will vary depending on the type of lettuce grown. Loose leaf types can be seeded densely and thinned to about 4 inches per plant. Heading types should be spaced about 8-12 inches apart. Lettuce may be grown right through the winter where the weather is mild, or under row cover, cold frames, etc.
